Covid-19 & Online Rehearsals

By 18/03/2020Announcements

With immediate effect we are taking the decision, in order to ensure the health and well-being of our members, to move all rehearsals online.

We have run 2 trials on a website called Zoom.us and it has proven successful! Granted, it’s not ideal, but it is a solution that allows us to meet for rehearsals and socialise in the safety of our own homes.

I will update out calendar (in the members area) with links to the online rehearsal room. All you have to do is follow the link.
Zoom works on all devices!! Desktop Computers, Laptops, Smart Phones (Andriod and ios) and ipads.

You will be asked if you want to download Zoom. This is optional, as you can either use Zoom on the website or via the app.

THINGS TO REMEMBER:

You may find it works better with headphones

To allow Zoom to access your camera and microphone (so that we can see and hear you – and vice versa) you will need to go to the Settings on your device, then to Privacy and click “Enable Camera Access” and “Enable Microphone Access” to allow ZOOM to use that facility.

The online-rehearsal room will only be open for the time of the rehearsal. If you try and follow the link hours before or hours after, you will get an error!!

Go To the MEMBERS AREA of ShowChoir and click on your rehearsal

Each rehearsal will have its own link, so it’s important that you click on the correct date!!

So, for example, if you want to attend the rehearsal for Wednesday 1st April, click on that rehearsal on the calendar and follow that link!

When you click your rehearsal, you will see the link and all the info you need

Paste the URL (Link) into your search bar

This box will ask you if you want to use the app.

If you want to use the app, click the “download & run Zoom” link

If you don’t want to use the app, click the “click here” link

Click the “join from your browser” link

Click the “Join Audio By Computer” link.

If you are on the website, it looks like this!

If you are on the app, it looks like this!

Click the “Settings” buttons at the bottom (or it may be a cog) to alter your audio & video settings

These are your AUDIO Settings

These are your VIDEO Settings

How it will look!

This will be dependant on the device you are using!! But there are 2 main views, “Gallery” and “Speaker”

The first image on the left is the GALLERY view, this means you will see everyone at the same time
The second image on the left is the SPEAKER view, this means you will only see the person who is speaking.

In GALLERY view on an iPad and a Laptop, you will see everyone in the rehearsal, but on a phone, you will only see 4 people.

You alter this by the link at the TOP RIGHT, “GALLERY VIEW” / “SPEAKER VIEW” (but the location of this link may change depending on the device you are on.

When we are working, it is necessary that I mute ALL microphones, so the only audio you will hear is mine!

When microphones are muted, NOONE (not even me) can hear you!!

Raise Your Hand

If, while we are working (and your microphone is on mute) you need to get my attention, there is a “Raise Your Hand” function. Click the button [Shown on the Left] and it alerts me that you need something!

Chat Facility

Periodically, before, after and during the rehearsal, I will unmute the microphones to allow people to chat, however, if you want to chat to anyone during the rehearsal, there is a “typed” chat facility. You can either chat to the entire group (publicly) or you can chat to an individual (privately)

I know some of you are nervous about trying this out, and some of you feel that being part of a choir is about meeting together to make music, socialise, and be with each other. Unfortunately, this virus has taken that liberty from us!! I have spent the past week researching ideas to allow us to “meet” and continue! I know it’s not ideal, but it’s the only option we have at the moment!
I know Manchester Show Choir and a lot of other choirs across the country are rehearsing this same way – it appears to be the way forward in light of the current restrictions. I hope you understand and will give it a go!

If you feel that you cannot work in this way, we will be sorry to see you go!!
You will need to give us 1 months notice, which is in line with our Terms & Conditions, and you will be made to feel more than welcome when you re-join us when the government says we are permitted to gather together!

ShowChoir have implemented remote rehearsal functionality
to overcome the adversity caused by Covid-19.

If you are self isolating
or social distancing yourself, you can still attend rehearsals and events remotely.
